The Town of Prescott Valley Council voted unanimously to enact Ordinance No.853 on Thursday night, December 20th, banning the use of handheld mobile communication devices while operating a motor vehicle. Prescott Valley joins Yavapai County, Prescott and Chino Valley in enacting similar legislation against using handheld devices while driving.

The law will go into effect on Saturday, January 19th. Prescott Valley Chief of Police Bryan Jarrell said before the second reading of the ordinance on Thursday night that the town will be doing an information and warning campaign until March 1st. On March 1st, violations will begin to be issued to offenders.

In the ordinance, it is stated violations will be designated as civil traffic violations and, in addition to any state surcharges that may apply, carry a civil penalty of $100 for the first offense and up to $2,500 (as determined by the Judge) for any subsequent violations within 12 months of a prior offense.
